Why Traditional Business Advice Feels Like a Lie—and What We Can Do Instead

brianna dick

Raise your hand if you’ve ever been told to:

  • Network your way to success (even if you feel out of place in those rooms).

  • Hustle harder (as if burnout is a badge of honor).

  • Take shortcuts to “make it” (even if they compromise your values).

Now, keep your hand up if that advice ever actually worked for you.

For me, traditional business advice felt like a script written by and for people with privilege—people who had access to safety nets, trust funds, and an existing network. It never accounted for folks like me who were building something out of nothing.

If this resonates, keep reading. Because it’s time to change the narrative.

The Truth About Traditional Business Advice and Why Traditional business advice fails

Mainstream business advice wasn’t built for everyone. It’s a framework that assumes:

  • You have money to invest upfront.

  • You have time to fail without consequences.

  • You can put profits before people without losing sleep.

For me, this system felt more like a gatekeeper than a guide. It didn’t align with my morals, finances, or circumstances. I had to rewrite the rules. And if you feel the same way, I bet you do too.

Why Morals Matter in Business

Success isn’t just about the numbers. It’s about building something that reflects who you are—your ethics, your values, your vision for the world. The traditional approach tells you to put these aside for the sake of “growth.” But let me ask you this:

What’s the point of growing a business if you hate what it stands for?

I refused to sacrifice my integrity to make a dollar. It’s not just about creating something profitable; it’s about creating something you can be proud of.

For Those Starting from Scratch

Let’s talk about the “bootstrap mentality” we glorify in business. I come from poverty. There were no safety nets, no mentorship programs tailored for people like me. Every risk I took had consequences.

When you’re building from the ground up, you can’t afford advice that doesn’t account for your reality. You need strategies that work for you, not cookie-cutter formulas designed for someone else’s circumstances.

It’s Time for a New Playbook

Here’s the hard truth: traditional advice isn’t just outdated; it’s irrelevant for a lot of us. The world is changing, and so are we. Let’s rewrite the rules for:

  • People who prioritize ethics over exploitation.

  • Business owners who want to build without burning out.

  • Entrepreneurs who are tired of chasing a version of success that doesn’t align with their reality.

If you’ve felt unseen, unheard, or underestimated in the world of business, I see you. And I’m calling on you to join me.

A Call to Action

Share this with a fellow business owner who feels like they don’t fit the mold. Let’s start a conversation. Let’s rewrite the rules. Because the future of business isn’t in following advice that doesn’t serve us—it’s in creating something that does.
